Do you like quirky comedies? Do you like existential philosophy? Or at least, do you like (or need) to spend a little time reflecting on meaning in your life? Is your life meaningful? Or would you simply enjoy jumping into a strange (but entertaining) reality that begins to remove the outer layers of you, that are not you? I heart this film.

 

The Opposite of Sex

For those who like their screen comedy tart, dry and savvy on the distaff side, The Opposite of Sex should be something of a godsend. The movie is also graced with one of the best ensemble casts in recent memory. Ricci is simply a marvel here, narrating as well as dominating the action with an uncanny sophistication, sexiness and mordant wit.

 

National Treasure

Is it a worthy successor to the "Indiana Jones" films? Not at all. The movie is predictable, corny and only slightly less believable than Scott Peterson's defense lawyers. But you take what you can get in these adventure-lean movie years. In a time in which such mediocrity as "The Mummy," "Tomb Raider" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" are embraced, we're doubtlessly enduring a swashbuckling recession.

 

Agent Cody Banks

J ust as "XXX" did, once "Cody Banks" establishes its hero as a "new kind of secret agent" it plugs him into the James Bond formula for the rest of the film. "Cody Banks" leans toward the 1960s movies, particularly "You Only Live Twice," with a villain who builds his lair inside a hollowed-out mountain. Muniz's charm was missing from last year's dud, "Big Fat Liar," but he gets it back here.

Ally McBeal

Judge Whipper Cone asks Ally to take on a pro-bono case of a young prostitute up on her third solicitation charge. Fish, meanwhile, wants to sue his uncle's church for discrimination, due to his uncle's overt bigotry towards vertically challenged people (short people). The church's contention is that they cannot support bigotry of any kind and allowing the uncle a service and proper burial is tantamount to endorsing the appalling views. Fish promises he will not propagate the attitudes in his eulogy. Renee talks Ally into double dating with the salad-dressing-on-the-chin guy if the Biscuit is invited.

A quick-witted drama, Psych stars James Roday ("The Dukes of Hazzard") as young police consultant, Shawn Spencer, who solves crimes with powers of observation so acute, that the precinct detectives think he's psychic - at least that's what he lets them be .

Ugly Betty   (Comedy)

A dramedy with a lot of heart. The humor can be pretty subtle which makes it more effective and does not detract from the story line. It also has a moral point of view that shows that the consequences of behavior can be long lasting and far reaching, and that other people are affected even when you want to believe that no one else is being hurt.
