Must Watch TV Shows for July 14th to July 20th, 2007

Movies

I Love Huckabees

Starting: 12:30 on Saturday 14th July. Duration: 2 hours and 5 minutes
Showing on
Star Movies.

Do you like quirky comedies? Do you like existential philosophy? Or at least, do you like (or need) to spend a little time reflecting on meaning in your life? Is your life meaningful? Or would you simply enjoy jumping into a strange (but entertaining) reality that begins to remove the outer layers of you, that are not you? I heart this film.

The Opposite of Sex

Starting: 17:00 on Saturday 14th July. Duration: 2 hours
Showing on
PIX.
For those who like their screen comedy tart, dry and savvy on the distaff side, The Opposite of Sex should be something of a godsend. The movie is also graced with one of the best ensemble casts in recent memory. Ricci is simply a marvel here, narrating as well as dominating the action with an uncanny sophistication, sexiness and mordant wit.

National Treasure

Starting: 21:00 on Sunday 15th July. Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes
Showing on
Zee Studio.
Is it a worthy successor to the "Indiana Jones" films? Not at all. The movie is predictable, corny and only slightly less believable than Scott Peterson's defense lawyers. But you take what you can get in these adventure-lean movie years. In a time in which such mediocrity as "The Mummy," "Tomb Raider" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" are embraced, we're doubtlessly enduring a swashbuckling recession.

Agent Cody Banks

Starting: 18:55 on Sunday 15th July. Duration: 2 hours and 5 minutes
Showing on
Star Movies.
J ust as "XXX" did, once "Cody Banks" establishes its hero as a "new kind of secret agent" it plugs him into the James Bond formula for the rest of the film. "Cody Banks" leans toward the 1960s movies, particularly "You Only Live Twice," with a villain who builds his lair inside a hollowed-out mountain. Muniz's charm was missing from last year's dud, "Big Fat Liar," but he gets it back here.

TV Shows

Ally McBeal

Starting: 18:00 on Thursday 12th July. Duration: 1 hour
Showing on
Zee Cafe.

Judge Whipper Cone asks Ally to take on a pro-bono case of a young prostitute up on her third solicitation charge. Fish, meanwhile, wants to sue his uncle's church for discrimination, due to his uncle's overt bigotry towards vertically challenged people (short people). The church's contention is that they cannot support bigotry of any kind and allowing the uncle a service and proper burial is tantamount to endorsing the appalling views. Fish promises he will not propagate the attitudes in his eulogy. Renee talks Ally into double dating with the salad-dressing-on-the-chin guy if the Biscuit is invited.

My Wife And Kids

Starting: 18:30 on Monday 16th July. Duration: 30 minutes
Showing on
Star World.

Tisha Campbell-martin Keeps Apologizing; Her Giddy, 2-year-old Son Xen Is Running Around The Set Of My Wife And Kids, Laughing And Shouting, While She Is Conducting An Interview. But There's No Need For Apology.

Psych

Starting: 23:00 on Saturday 14th July. Duration: 1 hour
Showing on
Star World.

A quick-witted drama, Psych stars James Roday ("The Dukes of Hazzard") as young police consultant, Shawn Spencer, who solves crimes with powers of observation so acute, that the precinct detectives think he's psychic - at least that's what he lets them be .

Ugly Betty   (Comedy)

Starting: 21:00 on Saturday 14th July. Duration: 1 hour
Showing on
Star World.

A dramedy with a lot of heart. The humor can be pretty subtle which makes it more effective and does not detract from the story line. It also has a moral point of view that shows that the consequences of behavior can be long lasting and far reaching, and that other people are affected even when you want to believe that no one else is being hurt. An English Jassi!

Questions of identity and personal responsibility are explored against a background of war and personal intrigue.

Sports

England v/s India

19th July 14.30 hrs onwards

So its here finally, the big series at a place where India's big 3 has rediscovered or established themselves in the past. Watch it for the way Sachin, Rahul and Saurav negate the swing and pace of the English and whether Indians can pull off a rare test triumph abroad. Spending 7 hours in front of the TV for each of the 5 days is very tempting proposition this time around.

TV recommendations for 23rd to 29th June, 2007

MOVIES

The Good Girl

The film is not your standard Jennifer Aniston fare. It's a work of some substance that requires an investment of attention and effort on the part of the viewer. The Good Girl is not mainstream fare. It does not have happy ending (instead, it has a fitting one) and ignores the traditional formulas. Instead, The Good Girl offers nothing more spectacular than a character study. And, although The Good Girl's protagonist may be trapped by routine, that's one claim that can never be made about the movie.

Starting: 14:00 on Saturday 23rd June. Duration: 3 hours
Showing on Zee Studio.

Back to the Future

Brilliantly constructed and virtually universal in its appeal, Robert Zemekis's Back to the Future blends equal parts hilarity, nostalgia, science fiction, screwball comedy, and white-knuckle suspense in a complex storyline wound tighter than a yo-yo in a centrifuge. The filmmakers followed up with a pair of back-to-back sequels that were originally intended as one film, and should have been left that way. They're maybe worth watching once or twice, but the original is worth returning to again and again.

Starting: 18:40 on Saturday 23rd June. Duration: 2 hours and 20 minutes
Showing on
Star Movies.

Exorcism of Emily Rose

A young girl (Jennifer Carpenter) dies under the care of her parish priest (Tom Wilkinson). While attending college, Emily believed she became possessed. After medical care ceases to work, she turned to her faith. In the care of her priest she dies and he goes on trial for her death. A truly spine-chilling film.

15:45 to 18:00 (2 hours and 15 minutes long).
Sunday 24th June on HBO.

Chocolat

Chocolat is a charming new bit of cocoa-flavored fluff from director Lasse Hallstrom (of The Cider House Rules), with Juliette Binoche and Johnny DeppThe result is light-hearted, as pleasurable as a richly fashioned piece of elegant chocolate, and as warm as a homemade cup of cocoa.

15:00 to 17:00 (2 hours long).
Sunday 24th June on Zee Studio

Movies

Bad Boys 2

Bad Boys 2 surpasses the original with more action, death-defying stunt work and a pretty good script for its genre. "Bad Boys 2" is exactly what a summer sequel should be – bigger, better and badder than the original. That being said, audiences should be prepared for extremely graphic violence coupled with slow-motion up-close shots of bullets ripping into people. I would have opted for a less violent more comedy approach – and I subtracted a star for the film's extreme excessiveness – for which the lead characters pay no consequence.
Showing on Zee Studio

Starting: 21:00 (2 hours and 30 minutes) Sun 17th June

Rocky

It's sometimes hard to remember what a great film the original Rocky is because its reputation has been hurt by too many unnecessary sequels.  Nevertheless, it's still impossible to resist the charms of this gritty, moving and sometimes very funny underdog story every time you revisit it. From Stallone's script to the perfect casting to the wonderful performances,  Rocky is one of those rare movies where all the key elements fall into place.  It still manages to inspire, and it's easy to see why this marvelous Cinderella story won the Academy Award for 1976's Best Picture.

Showing on PIX

Starting: 14:00 (3 hours) Sun 17th June.

Mask of Zorro
If a good, old-fashioned movie is what you seek, The Legend of Zorro is what you get. Good, it mostly is. Old-fashioned, it definitely is. This family-friendly opus features a handsome, humorous hero, a ravishing, feisty heroine, an adorable moppet and a magnificent horse. As for the villains, most of them are ugly as sin. On these simplistic terms, the movie succeeds stylishly. Regardless of how much derring-do they're up to, handsome Antonio Banderas and ravishing Catherine Zeta-Jones never have a hair out of place. Not that you want them to. The Zorro legends have never relied on grim reality.

Featuring critically acclaimed veteran actors such as Edward James Olmos as Commander William Adama and Mary McDonnell as President Laura Roslin, the new series began in October 2004. Many fans of the original series were disappointed in how different in tone, style, and content the reimagined version was from its original source material. On Internet message boards, many came to refer to the show as GINO, an acronym for Galactica In Name Only. In the second season episode "Pegasus," Ronald D. Moore named one of the Cylon characters Gina as a reference to the show's nickname
