TV recommendations for 23rd to 29th June, 2007

MOVIES

The Good Girl

The film is not your standard Jennifer Aniston fare. It's a work of some substance that requires an investment of attention and effort on the part of the viewer. The Good Girl is not mainstream fare. It does not have happy ending (instead, it has a fitting one) and ignores the traditional formulas. Instead, The Good Girl offers nothing more spectacular than a character study. And, although The Good Girl's protagonist may be trapped by routine, that's one claim that can never be made about the movie.

Starting: 14:00 on Saturday 23rd June. Duration: 3 hours
Showing on Zee Studio.

Back to the Future

Brilliantly constructed and virtually universal in its appeal, Robert Zemekis's Back to the Future blends equal parts hilarity, nostalgia, science fiction, screwball comedy, and white-knuckle suspense in a complex storyline wound tighter than a yo-yo in a centrifuge. The filmmakers followed up with a pair of back-to-back sequels that were originally intended as one film, and should have been left that way. They're maybe worth watching once or twice, but the original is worth returning to again and again.

Starting: 18:40 on Saturday 23rd June. Duration: 2 hours and 20 minutes
Showing on
Star Movies.

Exorcism of Emily Rose

A young girl (Jennifer Carpenter) dies under the care of her parish priest (Tom Wilkinson). While attending college, Emily believed she became possessed. After medical care ceases to work, she turned to her faith. In the care of her priest she dies and he goes on trial for her death. A truly spine-chilling film.

Sunday 24th June on HBO.

Chocolat

Chocolat is a charming new bit of cocoa-flavored fluff from director Lasse Hallstrom (of The Cider House Rules), with Juliette Binoche and Johnny DeppThe result is light-hearted, as pleasurable as a richly fashioned piece of elegant chocolate, and as warm as a homemade cup of cocoa.

Sunday 24th June on Zee Studio

Movies

Bad Boys 2

Bad Boys 2 surpasses the original with more action, death-defying stunt work and a pretty good script for its genre. "Bad Boys 2" is exactly what a summer sequel should be – bigger, better and badder than the original. That being said, audiences should be prepared for extremely graphic violence coupled with slow-motion up-close shots of bullets ripping into people. I would have opted for a less violent more comedy approach – and I subtracted a star for the film's extreme excessiveness – for which the lead characters pay no consequence.
Showing on Zee Studio

Starting: 21:00 (2 hours and 30 minutes) Sun 17th June

Rocky

It's sometimes hard to remember what a great film the original Rocky is because its reputation has been hurt by too many unnecessary sequels.  Nevertheless, it's still impossible to resist the charms of this gritty, moving and sometimes very funny underdog story every time you revisit it. From Stallone's script to the perfect casting to the wonderful performances,  Rocky is one of those rare movies where all the key elements fall into place.  It still manages to inspire, and it's easy to see why this marvelous Cinderella story won the Academy Award for 1976's Best Picture.

Starting: 14:00 (3 hours) Sun 17th June.

Mask of Zorro
If a good, old-fashioned movie is what you seek, The Legend of Zorro is what you get. Good, it mostly is. Old-fashioned, it definitely is. This family-friendly opus features a handsome, humorous hero, a ravishing, feisty heroine, an adorable moppet and a magnificent horse. As for the villains, most of them are ugly as sin. On these simplistic terms, the movie succeeds stylishly. Regardless of how much derring-do they're up to, handsome Antonio Banderas and ravishing Catherine Zeta-Jones never have a hair out of place. Not that you want them to. The Zorro legends have never relied on grim reality.

Battlestar Galactica
Featuring critically acclaimed veteran actors such as Edward James Olmos as Commander William Adama and Mary McDonnell as President Laura Roslin, the new series began in October 2004. Many fans of the original series were disappointed in how different in tone, style, and content the reimagined version was from its original source material. On Internet message boards, many came to refer to the show as GINO, an acronym for Galactica In Name Only. In the second season episode "Pegasus," Ronald D. Moore named one of the Cylon characters Gina as a reference to the show's nickname

ZipAZap Recommends - English Movies for 9th to 15th June

Shrek 2

It’s a languidly paced, beautifully made and amusingly told tale in which… duh, love conquers all with the assistance of a kitty cat that winds up the movies top dog. The picture is clever and vivacious -- at times, like the first "Shrek," it seems a bit taken with its own precociousness. But its moments of sheer inventiveness can still catch you off-guard, and some of them are wittily poetic. If you don’t want to shell out 200 bucks on the nearby multiplex to watch Shrek 3 and like animated toys with mature concepts, Shrek 2 is a sheer joy.

Never Say Never Again

“Now you’re on this, I hope we’re going to have some gratuitous sex and violence.” These words heralded the return of both James Bond and Sean Connery from semi-retirement in Never Say Never Again, but more pointedly, they stood as a challenge to the “official” Bond series. In retrospect, however, Never Say Never Again is as good a Bond film as any of its close contemporaries in the official franchise. This is due in no small measure to the presence of Connery, who so fully embodies the role that even a mediocre performance outclasses all other contenders. Perhaps the greatest Bond ever, watch Sean Connery in action- a phenomenon the Indian tv audience rarely has the opportunity to watch.

Star Wars III- Revenge of the Sith

SW3 stands as a remarkable achievement. Every moment is enthralling. The special effects are dazzling and the finely crafted story unites all the dangling pieces. All the nagging questions are answered. This time, the dialogue is mature, insightful, and haunting. George Lucas delivered the goods! The film opens with zest, zeal, a screen full of action, space ships in flight, large, small, bursting in flames, firing round after round. Anakin and Obi-Wan banter via intercoms in their small crafts racing to save the Chancellor. It's a shimmering spectacle of special effects and choreography splendidly set into light. Revenge Of The Sith is what we wanted all along: a chunky, funky space opera spectacular

The Polar Express

These moments, richly detailed and always surprising, make for a truly satisfying holiday picture, the kind everyone can enjoy, and which may even restore a little lost childhood in many adult viewers. You can't ask for much more. For the big, final narration, Mr. Tom ‘Oscar Winner’ Hanks himself pours it on with a heart-wrenching, tear-inducing, 4-boxes-of-tissues final narration that made the toughest and most cynical of audience members weep (I'm only human). While some of the dialogue involving a character known as lonely boy (also referred to as Billy) comes close, it's that final scene that will stick in your head for years. So watch it for the sake of your long forgotten childhood.

Born on The Fourth of July

Say what you will about Tom Cruise. Say he's a Scientologist loon. Say he's insane if he prefers Mushmouth Cruz over Ginger-Bush Kidman. Say he looked like a total prat trying to make the Mission Impossible movies, Vanilla Sky and Eyes Wide Shut seem worth the price of admission. But for every ten things about Tom Cruise that you can laugh at while drunk, there's one thing that tilts the scales back in his favor. For every gay porn actor that claims Tom rattled the rim, there's a performance like that in Minority Report. And for every time we ever wished we could see Cruise beaten to a bloody pulp so that our girlfriends would stop drooling over him, there's Born on the Fourth of July.
